10 questions to ask your therapist

A practical guide for clients: what to ask a therapist during a consultation to know if they're the right fit.

1. What is your approach to therapy?

Ask the therapist to describe their primary modality — for example, CBT, psychodynamic, EMDR, IFS, or an integrative approach — and how they typically structure sessions.

2. What experience do you have with my concern?

Share what brings you to therapy and ask how often they work with clients on similar concerns. Specialized experience often accelerates progress.

3. What does a typical session look like?

Understanding the rhythm — check-in, focus of the work, homework or reflection — helps you know what to expect week to week.

4. How will we measure progress?

A good therapist can describe how they'll help you track change and revisit goals over time.

5. How long do clients typically work with you?

Some therapists specialize in short-term, goal-oriented work; others provide longer-term support. Alignment on time horizon matters.

6. What is your fee, and do you accept insurance?

Clarify session fee, insurance, sliding scale, cancellation policy, and any out-of-network reimbursement paperwork they provide.

7. How do you handle between-session support?

Ask about messaging, crisis support, and what to do if you need to reach them between sessions.

8. What is your policy on confidentiality?

Understand the limits of confidentiality, especially around safety concerns, minors, or coordination with other providers.

9. How will we know it's working — or that it's time to try something else?

Great therapists welcome direct feedback and will adjust the plan or refer out when needed.

10. What made you become a therapist?

This is an optional but revealing question. You're looking for warmth, humility, and genuine interest in the work.
